First Flower of 2009

White Crocus

The first flowers have popped their heads up at Dragon Gardens. We have 5 white crocus blooms and are expecting over 200 others in blue, yellow, and purple. As you can see, we also have gumballs. Boy, do we have gumballs! Most are still on the trees, but a good wind or rain should shake them down. Maybe Prince will pick them up and put them in the compost bins --- we should be so lucky!!

Purple Lenten Rose

As you can see the Lenten Rose is also coming out with new green growth and beginning to bud. The green flowering variety has not formed buds yet, but should be coming out soon. Last summer these beauties put out many "babies" from seed, so we are hoping to have more fullness in the garden, as well as taking plants to the Matthews Farmers Market in the Spring.

Blue Hyacinths

When John cleaned the leaves out of the back garden beds last week, we had so many surprises. The blue hyacinths are poking their heads out of the ground, along with tulips and daffodils. The warm weather that we had in November, and again these past few weeks, has the garden totally confused.

Daylily "Babies" in the Greenhouse

John has been working diligently the past week to get all the "babies" lined out in the daylily beds. The plants are going in a bit late this year, so we will see how they perform this summer. In the year end post, I put the number at 250. I stand corrected -- we had over 700 "babies" from the 2008 hydridization program! Too bad we have to wait 2 years to see the blooms.
